The ‘County History of Yorkshire’ reported that the Racing Calendar of 1836 included a steeplechase meeting held under the auspices of the Badsworth Hunt in April 1836. The next year a meeting took place on Wednesday 29th March 1837 in fields near the village of Wentbridge and was followed by Ordinaries at the Red Lion Hotel, Pontefract. The Sporting Magazine recorded a Spring meeting organised by the Badsworth Hunt over 4 miles on a course near Pontefract on Tuesday 3rd April 1838. The steeplechase course started at Badsworth Hall and ended in a field near Hardwick, with the principal race, the Badsworth Hunt 10 Sovereigns Purse, won by Lord Hake’s Conservative.
